Biogas

The 1.3MW Biogas Plant is the ‘heart’ of Menchine, built in 2015 and run by UK Biogas it has become a crucial part of how the business operates. Fed by poultry litter, Bull muck and crops the plant outputs heat and electricity alongside a natural fertiliser which is used to grow crops on all of our land and is also used by nearby farmers.

The Anaerobic Digestor (AD) is currently operated by using a 30% manure and 70% crop mix, over the next 3-5 years we hope to increase that to 80/90% manure meaning that the whole system becomes a lot more efficient as land can be used to grow food products instead.

Producing heat to dry digestate and wood chip as well as providing electricity to the farm and national grid alongside the production of natural fertilizer the AD plant is able to provide most of what the farm needs to stay running, emphasizing the importance of closed-loop farming.
